Tambora, Indonesia, 1815</span></div> <div style="text-align: justify;"> <br /> <br /> </div> <div style="text-align: justify;"> </div> <div style="text-align: justify;"> </div> <div style="text-align: justify;"> Tambora was the biggest volcanic eruption ever recorded. It was so big, in fact, that it canceled summer. That's right, no summer. So much ash was thrown into the atmosphere when Tambora exploded in 1815 that it effectively blocked out sunlight and solar radiation, reflecting it back out away from our planet, which started getting kind of chilly and cloudy as a result. Thus, 1816 became the year without a summer. Way off in Europe and the United States crops failed and people starved, while back in Indonesia 10,000 people were killed nearly instantly by lava flows and toxic fumes. The overall death toll from the explosion and resulting tsunami was 92,000 (not counting the death of an entire season).</div> <div style="text-align: justify;"> </div> <div style="text-align: justify;"> <br /> <br /> </div> <div style="text-align: justify;"> </div> <div style="text-align: justify;"> <span style="font-size: medium;">2. Krakatoa (Krakatau), Indonesia, 1883</span></div> <div style="text-align: justify;"> </div> <div style="text-align: justify;"> <br /> <br /> </div> <div style="text-align: justify;"> </div> <div style="text-align: justify;"> When Krakatoa (also spelled Krakatau) blew its top in 1883, it did so with the force of 13,000 atomic bombs. No, really, it's true. They heard the Indonesian island go all the way in Australia, and tsunamis, ashes and toxic fumes overtook entire islands nearby. All in all, over 36,000 people lost their lives and whole villages just went away. The shockwave reverberated around the globe, registering on barographs thousands of miles away. The 1883 eruption destroyed almost the entire island, but, lest there be any doubt that the area is still active, a new island, dubbed Anak Krakatau ("child of Krakatau") has risen in its place ... and it gets bigger every day.<br /> <br /> </div> <div style="text-align: justify;"> </div> <div style="text-align: justify;"> </div> <div style="text-align: justify;"> </div> <div style="text-align: justify;"> <span style="font-size: medium;">3. Mt. Pelee, Martinique, 1902</span></div> <div style="text-align: justify;"> <br /> <br /> </div> <div style="text-align: justify;"> </div> <div style="text-align: justify;"> </div> <div style="text-align: justify;"> When Mt. Pelée exploded on the Caribbean island of Martinique in 1902, it killed 29,000 people and destroyed the entire city of St. Pierre. The residents had been watching the volcano shoot steam and sulfurous fumes into the air for several days, but on May 8, Pelée finally went in a terrifying display. Witnesses on ships just off its coast described a sudden massive mushroom cloud, filled with fiery hot ash and volcanic gases, consuming the island in seconds. Only two people survived the explosion, one of them a prisoner in a jail cell who was saved by his poorly ventilated, cavern-like accommodations. Sometimes your curse is your salvation.</div> <div style="text-align: justify;"> <br /> <br /> </div> <div style="text-align: justify;"> </div> <div style="text-align: justify;"> </div> <div style="text-align: justify;"> <span style="font-size: medium;">4. Vesuvius, Italy, 79</span></div> <div style="text-align: justify;"> </div> <div style="text-align: justify;"> <br /> <br /> </div> <div style="text-align: justify;"> </div> <div style="text-align: justify;"> When Mt. Vesuvius blew in A.D. 79, it left the entire city of Pompeii frozen in time, buried under a shroud of ash and pumice that rained down for nearly an entire day as the volcano raged. The 25,000 or so people that it buried were preserved for archaeologists to one day study and the volcano itself has now also been extensively studied. It's erupted over a dozen times since the burial of Pompeii, most recently in 1944. Since the area surrounding it in Italy is now pretty densely populated, let's hope it doesn't do that again any time soon.<br /> <br /> </div> <div style="text-align: justify;"> </div> <div style="text-align: justify;"> </div> <div style="text-align: justify;"> </div> <div style="text-align: justify;"> <span style="font-size: medium;">5. Kilauea, United States, 1983 - present (continuous)</span></div> <div style="text-align: justify;"> <br /> <br /> </div> <div style="text-align: justify;"> </div> <div style="text-align: justify;"> </div> <div style="text-align: justify;"> Kilauea (the name means "spewing" or "much spreading") may not be the most explosive or violent or destructive volcano, but give it credit for some staying power: the Hawaiian volcano has been erupting continuously for over 20 years now, making it one of the world's most active volcanoes. The current lava—spewing eruption started way back in 1983, when Ronald Reagan was president and blackberries were just things you ate. The volcano is said to be home of the Hawaiian volcano goddess, so maybe she's just been really fired up about something these past few decades. But just because it's a slow, steady eruption doesn't mean Kilauea hasn't caused some damage: The eruption has consumed a couple small towns and a stretch of highway and it's added nearly a square mile of land mass to the island of Hawaii as its lava spills into the Pacific. Just last year, Kilauea even exploded, throwing a bit of ash and gas out into the air. You know, just to keep you guessing.</div> <div style="text-align: justify;"> <br /> <br /> </div> <div style="text-align: justify;"> </div> <div style="text-align: justify;"> </div> <div style="text-align: justify;"> <span style="font-size: medium;">6. Nevada del Ruiz, Colombia, 1985</span></div> <div style="text-align: justify;"> <br /> <br /> </div> <div style="text-align: justify;"> </div> <div style="text-align: justify;"> </div> <div style="text-align: justify;"> When this Colombian volcano erupted in 1985, it killed 23,000 in the nearby village of Armero, making it the second deadliest volcanic eruption in the 20th century. Many were asleep during the nighttime eruption, which triggered a destructive mudslide-like flow of lava, mud and volcanic debris known as a lahar, amplified as the mountain's glaciers melted. And make no mistake, This volcano was a repeat offender, having taken out villages more than once during eruptions over the past several hundred years. Today, Nevada del Ruiz still poses a threat and thus retains its old nickname, "the sleeping lion."<br /> <br /> </div> <div style="text-align: justify;"> </div> <div style="text-align: justify;"> </div> <div style="text-align: justify;"> </div> <div style="text-align: justify;"> <span style="font-size: medium;">7. Mount St. Helens, United States, 1980</span><br /> <br /> </div> <div style="text-align: justify;"> </div> <div style="text-align: justify;"> </div> <div style="text-align: justify;"> </div> <div style="text-align: justify;"> The May 18, 1980, explosion of Mount St. Helens was the United States' deadliest and most destructive volcanic event, with 57 lives lost. The massive eruption, complete with a 15-mile-high ash plume, was preceded by a 5.1 magnitude earthquake, which caused a large chunk of the mountain to slide away. The volcano erupted violently for nine hours, taking Mount St. Helens from a symmetrical, dome-shaped, snow-capped peak to a topless mountain sporting a massive crater. Quite the makeover. The volcano has continued to belch steam and even magma since the eruption as it slowly rebuilds its dome. As for another big eruption in the future? We've got our eye on it.</div> <div style="text-align: justify;"> <br /> <br /> </div> <div style="text-align: justify;"> </div> <div style="text-align: justify;"> </div> <div style="text-align: justify;"> <span style="font-size: medium;">8. Mt. Pinatubo, Philippines, 1991</span><br /> <br /> </div> <div style="text-align: justify;"> </div> <div style="text-align: justify;"> </div> <div style="text-align: justify;"> </div> <div style="text-align: justify;"> The 1991 eruption of Mount Pinatubo, in the Philippines, was the second largest eruption of the 20th century, with a volcanic explosivity index rating of 6. That puts it somewhere in Krakatoa territory: bigger than Mount St. Helens' in 1980, but smaller than Tambora in 1815. (You know, for those of you who follow this volcano stuff.) Pinatubo finally exploded on June 15, tossing out some two and a half cubic miles of material, including rock, ash and toxic fumes. Some 800 people died as a result of the eruption, which left a mile-wide crater lake at the summit.</div> <div style="text-align: justify;"> </div> <div style="text-align: justify;"> <br /> <br /> </div> <div style="text-align: justify;"> </div> <div style="text-align: justify;"> <span style="font-size: medium;">9. El Chichon, Mexico, 1982</span></div> <div style="text-align: justify;"> <br /> <br /> </div> <div style="text-align: justify;"> </div> <div style="text-align: justify;"> </div> <div style="text-align: justify;"> How about a swim in a mountaintop lake? When El Chichon erupted in 1982, it killed 2,000 nearby residents in Chiapas, Mexico, and left behind a brooding, sulfuric, acidic lake that formed when the dome collapsed into a crater and filled with water. Probably not something you'd want to take a dip in. What's worse, no one saw the eruption coming. Most people thought that the volcano had long ago gone extinct, so when El Chichon belched out a "hello," it was quite the unpleasant surprise. Like other large volcanic explosions, the ash sent into the atmosphere had a worldwide atmospheric effect, leading to cooler temperatures across the globe, along with a nice bonus in the form of some particularly colorful sunrises and sunsets.<br /> <br /> </div> <div style="text-align: justify;"> </div> <div style="text-align: justify;"> </div> <div style="text-align: justify;"> </div> <div style="text-align: justify;"> <span style="font-size: medium;">10. Unzen, Japan, 1792</span></div> <div style="text-align: justify;"> </div> <div style="text-align: justify;"> <br /> <br /> </div> <div style="text-align: justify;"> </div> <div style="text-align: justify;"> Mount Unzen's biggest eruption happened way back in 1792, when, along with a related tsunami, it killed 15,000 people. The Japanese volcano was largely quiet for the next 200 years or so. And then Unzen began to rumble. It started to ooze lava a couple weeks before it violently erupted in 1991, killing 43 people, including a group of scientists and reporters, and forcing the evacuation of thousands of homes. It remained active, releasing lava and ash until about 1995. Since then, it's been getting some much-needed rest.</div> <div style="text-align: justify;"> </div> <div style="text-align: justify;"> <br /> <br /> </div> <div style="text-align: justify;"> Source :- http://www.unbelievableinfo.com/2013/12/volcanic-eruptions-top-10.html </div> </div> </div>

Blood Falls Of Antarctica

<div dir="ltr" style="text-align: left;" trbidi="on"> <div dir="ltr" style="text-align: left;"> <div style="text-align: justify;"> The Taylor Glacier in the McMurdo Dry Valleys of Antarctica flows a curious blood-red colored water. When it was first discovered by geologist Griffith Taylor in 1911, the color was thought to have come from an algae. The source of the red color was later discovered to be an iron-rich underground saltwater lake that was trapped by the encroaching glacier at least 1.5 million years ago. The temperature of the water is -5 Celsius, but it's so salty that it doesn't freeze.</div> <div style="text-align: justify;"> <br /></div> <div style="text-align: justify;"> </div> <div style="text-align: justify;"> </div> <div style="text-align: justify;"> But the Blood Falls houses another secret, which scientists from Harvard University have started to uncover - it's home to an entire ecosystem of bacteria, trapped for millennia in conditions that are extremely inhospitable to life.<br /> <br /> <br /></div> <div style="text-align: justify;"> </div> <div style="text-align: justify;"> </div> <div style="text-align: justify;"> </div> <div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"> <a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjYGDag9wIzA8MIOp7eLFlGlF721JHR6atkvAJEo_xn4XYEOmZMs5CnQ4i7o2OUabBQGSW4UYULBvXVKYbsSCZqm3hyvwsGG4CsEERO9_rt9d8lMe87gQkGNXsYqRCVoivtCMNioJg-ha8/s1600/Blood+Falls+01.jpg" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="426" id="postimg" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjYGDag9wIzA8MIOp7eLFlGlF721JHR6atkvAJEo_xn4XYEOmZMs5CnQ4i7o2OUabBQGSW4UYULBvXVKYbsSCZqm3hyvwsGG4CsEERO9_rt9d8lMe87gQkGNXsYqRCVoivtCMNioJg-ha8/s640/Blood+Falls+01.jpg" width="640" /></a></div> <br /> <div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"> <a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiP_ITXOo1PgoyuNzA-k5mcAVC0YGsaBfQXNCT8-9puhNUS15yqrNEH4iylOFQUQy5pKOnQrDHUEwVSqub5hsG4F-nkfd09f0LSNI_QQ_kP5h7cAm556hYVMzsYL-qBDN5i-h06iL9SETY/s1600/Blood+Falls+02.jpg" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="426" id="postimg" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiP_ITXOo1PgoyuNzA-k5mcAVC0YGsaBfQXNCT8-9puhNUS15yqrNEH4iylOFQUQy5pKOnQrDHUEwVSqub5hsG4F-nkfd09f0LSNI_QQ_kP5h7cAm556hYVMzsYL-qBDN5i-h06iL9SETY/s640/Blood+Falls+02.jpg" width="640" /></a></div> <br /> <div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"> <a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhtSf0VlznWoYtP0AHD37p5SGC50STuSumixPZ_OyloSzJFPMr8-UiZv4kXA2JsJ8YEm0Vc6JwpJucDKV5e1c5ejk4cTs-8lEaDWQkQSbo1c2_6UuxG0-iMTUr0507-xWFCRCzQ8Vcel8U/s1600/Blood+Falls+03.jpg" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="426" id="postimg" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhtSf0VlznWoYtP0AHD37p5SGC50STuSumixPZ_OyloSzJFPMr8-UiZv4kXA2JsJ8YEm0Vc6JwpJucDKV5e1c5ejk4cTs-8lEaDWQkQSbo1c2_6UuxG0-iMTUr0507-xWFCRCzQ8Vcel8U/s640/Blood+Falls+03.jpg" width="640" /></a></div> <div style="text-align: justify;"> </div> <div style="text-align: justify;"> Roughly two million years ago, the Taylor Glacier sealed beneath it a small body of water which contained an ancient community of microbes. Trapped below a thick layer of ice, they have remained there ever since, isolated inside a natural time capsule. With no light or free oxygen and little heat, the microbes had no chance of getting energy through photosynthesis. Instead, the microbes started to live off the minerals that were trapped in the lake with them, evolving independently of the rest of the living world.<br /> <br /></div> <div style="text-align: justify;"> </div> <div style="text-align: justify;"> </div> <div style="text-align: justify;"> </div> <div style="text-align: justify;"> The existence of the Blood Falls ecosystem shows that life can exist in the most extreme conditions on Earth.</div> <div style="text-align: justify;"> </div> <div style="text-align: justify;"> </div> <div style="text-align: justify;"> The fascinating secrets that remain locked inside the inaccessible sub-glacier lake will help scientist understand the range of conditions to which life can adapt and to advance assessment of the possibility of life elsewhere in the solar system, in places such as Mars or Europa, an ice-covered moon of Jupiter. Indeed, scientists of the NASA Astrobiology Institute speculate that these worlds could contain subglacial liquid water environments favorable to hosting elementary forms of life, which would be better protected at depth from ultraviolet and cosmic radiation than on the surface.</div> <div style="text-align: justify;"> <br /></div> <div style="text-align: justify;"> </div> <div style="text-align: justify;"> </div> <div style="text-align: justify;"> Source :- http://www.unbelievableinfo.com/2013/12/blood-falls-of-antarctica.html </div> </div> </div>

He wasn't too happy about the 11 mile hike back to civilization, and his plane remained stuck and rusting upon the mountain as a monument to his discovery. The old man's skeleton indicates he suffered from a number of afflictions, including arthritis, and had numerous broken bones. The discovery of her species, Homo floresiensis, brought into question the belief that Homo sapiens was the only form of mankind for the past 30,000 years. Scientists are still debating whether Homo floresiensis was its own species, or merely a group of diseased modern humans. Evidence is mounting that these small beings were, in fact, a distinct human species.</div> <div style="text-align: justify;"> </div> <div style="text-align: justify;"> </div> <div style="text-align: justify;"> <span style="font-size: medium;">Homo sapiens</span></div> <div style="text-align: justify;"> <span style="font-size: medium;"> </span></div> <div style="text-align: justify;"> </div> <div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"> <a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhkN_036eBL2-BdRsaGek_H1YCdIGg8W2AWhGVYLNR2Ueh3F9YE-rMlrbVYDXnNjaTChgPzcpFbQu-_nJ4VkEZmo-Jt_VQ_QfjhYN7lRMKI2bj6VHKnfkr0TgcUr77I-GZXHTkGUvN0LsQ/s1600/Homo+sapiens.JPG" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="482" id="postimg" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhkN_036eBL2-BdRsaGek_H1YCdIGg8W2AWhGVYLNR2Ueh3F9YE-rMlrbVYDXnNjaTChgPzcpFbQu-_nJ4VkEZmo-Jt_VQ_QfjhYN7lRMKI2bj6VHKnfkr0TgcUr77I-GZXHTkGUvN0LsQ/s640/Homo+sapiens.JPG" width="640" /></a></div> <div style="text-align: justify;"> </div> <div style="text-align: justify;"> Bones can only tell us so much. The Island Of Strange Plants - Socotra

<div dir="ltr" style="text-align: left;" trbidi="on"> <div dir="ltr" style="text-align: left;"> <div style="text-align: justify;"> Socotra is a small archipelago of four islands in the Indian Ocean, near the Gulf of Aden. Situated some 250 miles off the coast of Yemen, the largest member of the archipelago, also called Socotra, is home to some of the weirdest looking plants that are found nowhere else on the planet. Like the Galapagos Islands, this island is teeming with 825 rare species of plants of which more than a third are endemic. Extremely high levels of endemism also occur in Socotra’s reptiles. 90% of its reptile species and 95% of its land snail species do not occur anywhere else in the world. The marine life of Socotra is also very diverse, with 253 species of reef-building corals, 730 species of coastal fish and 300 species of crab, lobster and shrimp, and well represented in the property’s marine areas.</div> <div style="text-align: justify;">  </div> <div style="text-align: justify;">  </div> <div style="text-align: justify;"> </div> <div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"> <a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgP1oz_MPURLegcGBd0C-_99hGbc9uCWtdl8-1I0kyl3xmzsepvY2-flb7hlOSUZOZYoECJxCgp_FI_Kbfzcxb1NDLfHENWtT1QdGLvY1wLACXp31AM8h5hFvl_ArfIvxNy4WsGk2gvrqY/s1600/Socotra+01.jpg" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="426" id="postimg" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgP1oz_MPURLegcGBd0C-_99hGbc9uCWtdl8-1I0kyl3xmzsepvY2-flb7hlOSUZOZYoECJxCgp_FI_Kbfzcxb1NDLfHENWtT1QdGLvY1wLACXp31AM8h5hFvl_ArfIvxNy4WsGk2gvrqY/s640/Socotra+01.jpg" width="640" /></a></div> <br /> <div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"> <a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiVR48VtvuFJgZcVAE5DhrJH-INS8ajFjROKytDNX2PUQASniiBEUnGJabpCGr5SOi4cOLKK6Uy4Mt8vd61ae-XzQNU91GIWwv-Hdw37wYPH4MMoVx17t88_RTGvjtIIHPJvnDTZDqm4js/s1600/Socotra+02.jpg" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="478" id="postimg" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiVR48VtvuFJgZcVAE5DhrJH-INS8ajFjROKytDNX2PUQASniiBEUnGJabpCGr5SOi4cOLKK6Uy4Mt8vd61ae-XzQNU91GIWwv-Hdw37wYPH4MMoVx17t88_RTGvjtIIHPJvnDTZDqm4js/s640/Socotra+02.jpg" width="640" /></a></div> <br /> <div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"> <a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjxjK3CIrJKr-Mypncxm0_LvsX5ZLnELRAMYQJFJ0EaCDiGQkVqA3Bd0P-J5QzRxo19L59rA14789Q_KBb091ujAit6zkRt81vI0yfLpNGwbOH0KDtnCiz5EXDZ33hkzrLpneriIkPZtas/s1600/Socotra+03.jpg" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" id="postimg" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjxjK3CIrJKr-Mypncxm0_LvsX5ZLnELRAMYQJFJ0EaCDiGQkVqA3Bd0P-J5QzRxo19L59rA14789Q_KBb091ujAit6zkRt81vI0yfLpNGwbOH0KDtnCiz5EXDZ33hkzrLpneriIkPZtas/s1600/Socotra+03.jpg" /></a></div> <br /> <div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"> <a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEig-GKaJbDxGW2Z6Ul0vhq7Zv475BKLwRTrK37-0D__WH4juo44rC-h61O7R2g5mJgSGdOaTSNHGwF5xYURUA2L7ao7ad3vEVX16v7PexSlRSHskkeMUbdPI7icTdURnxCLvjYZ5gysw3E/s1600/Socotra+04.jpg" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" id="postimg" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEig-GKaJbDxGW2Z6Ul0vhq7Zv475BKLwRTrK37-0D__WH4juo44rC-h61O7R2g5mJgSGdOaTSNHGwF5xYURUA2L7ao7ad3vEVX16v7PexSlRSHskkeMUbdPI7icTdURnxCLvjYZ5gysw3E/s1600/Socotra+04.jpg" /></a></div> <div style="text-align: justify;"> </div> <div style="text-align: justify;"> Some 250 million years or more ago, when all the planet’s major landmasses were joined and most major life-forms roamed freely from one region to another, Socotra already stood as an island apart. Ever since Socotra has been a breeding ground of birds, plants and animals. The isolation from other land masses meant whatever evolutionary process the flora and fauna underwent never spread to the mainland.</div> <div style="text-align: justify;">  </div> <div style="text-align: justify;">  </div> <div style="text-align: justify;"> </div> <div style="text-align: justify;"> One of the most striking of Socotra's plants is the dragon's blood tree (Dracaena cinnabari), which is a strange-looking, umbrella-shaped tree. Its red sap was thought to be the dragon's blood of the ancients, sought after as a medicine and a dye and today used as paint and varnish. Also important in ancient times were Socotra's various endemic aloes, used medicinally, and for cosmetics. Other endemic plants include the giant succulent tree Dorstenia gigas, Moraceae, the cucumber tree Dendrosicyos socotranus, the rare Socotran pomegranate (Punica protopunica), Aloe perryi and Boswellia socotrana.</div> <div style="text-align: justify;">  </div> <div style="text-align: justify;">  </div> <div style="text-align: justify;"> </div> <div style="text-align: justify;"> Unlike the Galapagos, however, Socotra is significantly inhabited, and has been for some 2,000 years. Fishing, animal husbandry, and the cultivation of dates are the primary occupations of the indigenous population.</div> <div style="text-align: justify;">  </div> <div style="text-align: justify;"> Source :- http://www.unbelievableinfo.com/2013/12/socotra.html </div> </div> </div>

Miniature Desert In The Freezing Cold Of Siberia - Chara Sands

<div dir="ltr" style="text-align: left;" trbidi="on"> <div dir="ltr" style="text-align: left;"> <div style="text-align: justify;"> Just 40 kilometers from the Kodar Glaciers in Kalar district of Trans-Baikal region, right next to the snow-capped mountains and the limitless sea of taiga spotted with blue lakes and huge ice fields, lies a bright yellow spot – the Chara Sands. This sand dune is approximately 10 kilometers long and 5 kilometers wide; some of the dunes are as high as 15 – 30 meters. The terrain here is so pronounced it almost looks like a real desert. It’s like a real desert, but with features you won’t see anywhere else except in Trans-Baikal. Cold blue icing right next to warm yellow sand; instead of camels, a reindeer caravan treads across the sands, tended by an Evenk driver. You might stumble upon an oasis among the sand ridges where palms gave way to northern larches. The desert is surrounded by mountains covered with snow even during the summer; the dunes run into bogs or lakes.<br /> <br /> </div> <div style="text-align: justify;"> </div> <div style="text-align: justify;"> </div> <div style="text-align: justify;"> </div> <div style="text-align: justify;"> Despite the sands dune’s small area, the terrain is quite uneven here. In the central region it’s mostly dunes and dune chains, interspersed with blown hollows and hilly sands. In the outskirts, it’s sand ridges. Large dune chains look very impressive – between 150 and 700 meters long. And the whole chain stretches for 2.5 kilometers, 15-30 meters high. In the central part of the massif there’s a 40-50-meter high ledge integrated into the dune chain’s slope. In the south-west the dune chains get thicker, and are the highest. The windward dune slopes are gentle (10-15°), while the lee ones are steep (30-35°), covered with ripples.</div> <div style="text-align: justify;"> <br /> </div> <div style="text-align: justify;"> </div> <div style="text-align: justify;"> </div> <div style="text-align: justify;"> Chara Sands was formed during the Muruktin (Zyrian) glaciation period (about 100 – 55 thousand years ago) as a lake delta at the front zone of the Sakukan glacier, when Chara hollow was filled with water. Wind erosion during the Holocene era affected the top 20 meters of the massif producing the ripples, dunes, blown sands etc., mostly stretched in the north-western direction.</div> <div style="text-align: justify;"> <br /> </div> <div style="text-align: justify;"> Source :-http://www.unbelievableinfo.com/2013/12/chara-sands.html </div> </div> </div>

It is situated facing NW near the top (at approx. 800 ft) of a very impressive steep escarpment below the Ridgeway long distance footpath, Whitehorse hill and the Saxon hillfort of Uffington castle and above Dragon hill. There is convenient parking nearby at Woolstone hill and at Whitehorse hill. This high locale makes the horse difficult to view from close quarters (although it can be seen quite well from some parts of the B4507), it is seen rather better from most areas of the Vale of the White Horse.<br /> <br /> <br /></div> <div style="text-align: justify;"> </div> <div style="text-align: justify;"> </div> <div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"> <a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjsnbMJS_81w0YVFROwd6LqWhISu4EKXt8_hA6QdYLRMREBO3D0wL1skyqDyKrLTorb63gklP9pa3ya1LFxGwYigVC5mYiedtCMI0K3ckgf9Z2CKv-QwMrQrMilmhwmkgqRd3LkzjxUHBs/s1600/White+Horse+01.jpg" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="426" id="postimg" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjsnbMJS_81w0YVFROwd6LqWhISu4EKXt8_hA6QdYLRMREBO3D0wL1skyqDyKrLTorb63gklP9pa3ya1LFxGwYigVC5mYiedtCMI0K3ckgf9Z2CKv-QwMrQrMilmhwmkgqRd3LkzjxUHBs/s640/White+Horse+01.jpg" width="640" /></a></div> <br /> <div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"> <a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj1L30NVGcfT1SPibQAiGI2pVPl7kdRt6v51fT710Tx5kijWg_CJPY_IfB8zfDieTEiUbjcQohyphenhyphenlvy6qp3yI8Sc5koVFTghoMnn5QNrQ1XckwLsPVVD4__g4IT13VSYzyG4-uy2JD6deRU/s1600/White+Horse+02.jpg" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="426" id="postimg" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj1L30NVGcfT1SPibQAiGI2pVPl7kdRt6v51fT710Tx5kijWg_CJPY_IfB8zfDieTEiUbjcQohyphenhyphenlvy6qp3yI8Sc5koVFTghoMnn5QNrQ1XckwLsPVVD4__g4IT13VSYzyG4-uy2JD6deRU/s640/White+Horse+02.jpg" width="640" /></a></div> <div style="text-align: justify;"> </div> <div style="text-align: justify;"> The best view is undoubtedly from the air, but lacking aerial capabilities the best view is from about 1 mile to the North, although the view from Dragon hill is not bad. It is also the largest of the horses being some 374 feet in length and 110 feet in height, constructed of trenches which are 5 to 10 feet in width and 2 to 3 feet deep and filled with chalk, this is a few feet above the natural chalk of the hill. The horse is in excellent condition being maintained by the National Trust. The edges are well defined partially consolidated with concrete (although well hidden) and the top edge reinforced with polypropylene netting, the chalk white and well compacted and erosion repaired when necessary. The horse was scoured on the 24th June 2000.<br /> <br /> </div> <div style="text-align: justify;"> </div> <div style="text-align: justify;"> </div> <div style="text-align: justify;"> </div> <div style="text-align: justify;"> The Uffington white horse is undoubtedly Britain’s oldest and most famous hill figure, which has recently been dated at 3000 years old by the Oxford Archeological Unit. 1000 years older than previously thought. This the oldest hill figure and inspired the creation of many of the other white horses although and particularly its closeness to Uffington castle may have inspired the creation of the first Westbury horse by Bratton camp, which also faced right. The earliest reference to it was in in the 1070's when white horse hill was mentioned, the first actual reference to the horse itself was in 1190.<br /> <br /></div> <div style="text-align: justify;"> </div> <div style="text-align: justify;"> </div> <div style="text-align: justify;"> </div> <div style="text-align: justify;"> The horse is unique in its features, the horse being a very long sleek disjointed figure and this leads some to believe it represents the mythical dragon that St. George slain on the adjacent Dragon hill or even his horse. However others believe it represents a Celtic horse goddess Epona, known to represent fertility, healing and death. It may have been created to be worshipped in religious ceremonies. Similar horses feature in Celtic jewelry and there is also evidence for horse worship in the Iron Age. The scouring of the horse is believed to have been a religious festival in later times, giving more creditability to the figure being of religious origin. Others believe that it commemorates Alfred’s victory over the Danes in 861 AD or that it was created in the seventh century by Hengist in the image of a horse on his standard, however the recent scientific data upon its age seem to discount these more modern theories. Several Iron age coins bearing representations of horses very similar to the Uffington horse have been found and would support the theory of the horse being from an earlier period than the seventh or eight centuries.<br /> <br /> </div> <div style="text-align: justify;"> </div> <div style="text-align: justify;"> </div> <div style="text-align: justify;"> </div> <div style="text-align: justify;"> Also unusual is the fact that the horse faces to the right while all other horses and other animal hill figures face left, with three exceptions, the very first Westbury horse, the Osmington horse and the more modern Bulford Kiwi. The earliest record of the white horse is from Abingdon Abbey in the late 12th century, although white horse hill was mentioned a century earlier. There are many records after this period with a very good historical record from the 18th century in which the horse has changed little in appearance from then to the present day. There were occasions when the horse became overgrown, 1880 for example and was in danger of being lost like some of the other hill figures. There is no danger of this happening now, with English Heritage caring for this Ancient monument.<br /> <br /> </div> <div style="text-align: justify;"> </div> <div style="text-align: justify;"> Source :- http://www.unbelievableinfo.com/2013/12/uffington-white-horse.html </div> </div> </div>

This peculiar tree is called Eucalyptus deglupta, commonly known as the Rainbow Eucalyptus, and also known as the Mindanao Gum, or the Rainbow Gum. The multi-coloured streaks on its trunk comes from patches of outer bark that are shed annually at different times, showing the bright-green inner bark.
